Season update: Mackerel
As autumn arrives, so does the eagerly awaited mackerel fishing season. This period is renowned for yielding the world’s finest mackerel, which have spent the summer months feasting off the Norwegian coast. By autumn, these mackerel are rich in flavorful fat, offering both exceptional taste and numerous health benefits.
This year, the season has kicked off three weeks earlier than last year, marking a significant shift. The average size of the mackerel has been impressive, ranging from 420 grams to a substantial 570 grams, with a trend towards the higher end of the spectrum.
The current fat content of the mackerel is already between 25-30%, indicating a particularly rich and nutritious catch. Fishing methods have included both trawl and purse seiner techniques.
Pelagia is actively processing this year’s catch at their factories in Selje, Liavåg, and Kalvåg. With over 80 vessels currently engaged in mackerel fishing, this season promises to be both productive and rewarding.
